Ramadan is the fasting month of the Muslims in all around the world as well as in Iran. After eleven months of normal eating and drinking, during this month, people do not eat and drink at time distance of Morning Azan/Athan (praying time) to the Night Azan. In addition to not eating and not drinking, people tend to behave better than normal days, as an example, not tell a lie, not to tell bad words in presence or absence of the others, not to try to cheat others, behave better for their social role (son, daughter, father, mother, husband, wife, etc.), and so on.
Fasting has got advantages for the body, as well. We believe it is good for the bowels, kidneys, blood and so on.
Ramadan in a way is the month of purifying the soul. At this month, you get to have your best connection with your God and a lot of good things can happen in your life.
This is the month which holy Quran was revealed by God to prophet Mohammad. It is said in Quran that: "We revealed Quran in the night of Qadr". Qadr night is the night of 18th or 20th or 21th of Ramdan. It is not clear which night and since then, people tend to stay awake until really late at these nights to make the most of it, praying and crying with the full emotion of the relation with their creator.
During Ramdan, we eat two meals instead of three meals: 1. Sahari (Midnight Supper) 2. Iftar (breaking meal). For the first meal we eat a full meal like lunch, and drink a lot of water and tea.
For the second meal (Iftar), the amount is similar to breakfast but the fresh bread and mostly soup and wheat pastry (Halim) are the permanent members of the table.
A very nice tradition in Iran during Ramadan is Nazri (Votive Food). People make food and distribute it among other ones for free. The reason is that they have a vow with their God to feed other people.
The last but not the least eating in Ramadan is Bamiyeh and Zolbiya. A very sweet cookie-like. A lot of Iranians suffer from diabetics, but still we eat a lot of sugar in our meals!!!
